We hold stock!

Many furniture companies don't like holding stock. They want their manufacturers and suppliers to hold the stock for them, so that they don't have to pay for a warehouse and employ staff to run it. It makes sense on some level, but unfortunately not holding stock causes lots of problems for the customer.

Problem 1: They haven't seen the product.

Companies that use standard images and order back-to-back from their suppliers have never usually seen the items that they are selling. This means that they can't give you accurate information about the items, or know for sure whether the goods are up to scratch in terms of quality. When you buy in advance you can foresee any problems like this, and advise your customers of product characteristics and quality.

Problem 2: Inaccurate stock and delivery information.

Very often the worst problem is that the manufacturers and suppliers can be inaccurate with their due dates. After all they don't have to pick up the phone to angry customers awaiting their goods. Supplier deliveries can be subject to delays which are out of the retailer's control. If you need furniture for a specific deadline it's important the company physically has the stock in their warehouse, or can give you a solid due date they that are confident about.

Problem 3: What if the item arrives from the supplier damaged?

Lets say the supplier delivers the orders on time, and the retailer goes about scheduling your order. Then upon the pre-delivery quality check (or worst case on your doorstep) the product is found to be damaged. The retailer doesn't hold stock so can't supply you with another, and is forced to wait until the supplier delivers in again. This could be weeks if not months. Then imagine if it's damaged again! This situation is not uncommon, and can lead to you waiting months and months for your order.
